The Cost of Living in Israel – How to Survive on a Tight Budget?
Living on a tight budget in Israel can be challenging… but it is possible.
I know. I have been living here for 15+ years (after making Aliyah from Los Angeles).
As a life coach based in Tel Aviv, I have helped many new immigrants to Israel – and who are typically shocked about the cost of living in Israel upon their arrival.
That said, if you are considering moving to Israel here are some valuable bits of information about the cost of living in Israel
Plus, some tips about on how to survive on a budget.
Let’s get into it.
1. Find Affordable Housing
Israel (in general, but especially Tel Aviv) has a high cost of living, and housing is usually the biggest expense you will have.
I suggest to look for shared apartments with roommates to split the rent and utilities.
If you are with your your family, this wouldn’t be optimal – so you should probably search for apartments in less popular neighborhoods that are cheaper to live in.
2. Use Public Transportation
The public transportation system in Israel is very reliable… and relatively cheap.
Use buses or trains to get around instead of taking taxis or driving your own car, which is costly.
Why is driving your own car costly?
Because gas prices are very high, and the cost of insurance, regular checkups, and repairs add up.
Basically, owning a car will cost you in the area 1,500 NIS per month (if you completely own your car).
So, if and where you can… ride the bus / train.
3. Cook at home
Eating out can be expensive, so start cooking as many of your your meals at home as you can.
You should try to buy groceries from small local vegetable stands and lost-cost supermarkets (I like Rami Levy) instead of expensive specialty stores.
And of course, you can also prepare meals in bulk and freeze the leftovers for future meals.
4. Look for free activities
Israel is a country with many, many free events and activities.
There is a large art scene in Tel Aviv, and so many great things to enjoy in Jerusalem.
Look for free concerts, cultural events, historical sites, national parks, and beaches, all which are free to enjoy.
5. Set a budget
To survive and thrive in Israel, it’s important to have a budget and stick to it.
Track your expenses and make a plan for your spending each month.
If you can, spend no more than you need and start to get ahead financially.
To do this, you can use budgeting apps that help you manage your finances.
Also, you might be able to start preparing for the coats of living in Israel with a simple Excel or Word document.
No matter what method you choose to manage your finances… start ASAP.
In Conclusion…
By following even one of these tips, you will be taking a big step forward towards surviving in Israel on a tight budget.
For those of you who are planning to move to Israel, it may require some sacrifices and adjustments… but it is possible to live comfortably while staying within your means.
